UPDATE (MON 4/28 at 6:35 PM):

Organized severe thunderstorms are moving across southeast Minnesota and will continue into western and central Wisconsin this evening. These storms are embedded with a few supercells capable of producing tornadoes. As the storms continue, they may organize into a larger complex, increasing the threat for damaging winds along with the ongoing tornado risk.

A Tornado Watch is currently in effect for western Wisconsin until 11:00 PM. The Storm Prediction Center has said that a "downstream" Tornado Watch is likely going to be needed.

UPDATE: Good morning! We are waking up to a round of showers and thunderstorms heading our way. These are below severe limits, but expect heavy rain and frequent lightning.

There is no change in the forecast, but to note, this is round 1 of 3. We are expecting 2 more rounds of storms.

Please charge your phones and stay weather aware! I will be posting updates throughout the day so turn on notifications!

Good evening everyone! The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 3/5 (Enhanced) risk for a majority of the area, while a Level 4/5 (Moderate) risk is in effect for the far southeastern portion of the area. Multiple rounds of thunderstorms are expected Monday and Monday night with all threats possible - damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes, and flash flooding.

Round 1: Thunderstorms may move into the area anytime before 2PM. These storms could produce hail up to 1" in diameter, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and heavy rain.

Round 2: A second round of storms may develop. These storms would likely be isolated, but IF they form, they could quickly turn severe. All storms could be capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. There is great uncertainty with this round, however.

Round 3: This round is considered to be the "main event". A line of strong to severe storms is expected to sweep through the area later Monday evening into the overnight hours. This line would be capable of producing widespread damaging wind gusts, large hail, and embedded tornadoes. These storms will be fast-moving (up to 60 MPH), meaning there will be little warning time once storms form.

Important to note: Whether we see major storms depends on if a lid of warm air high up in the atmosphere — called the 'cap' — breaks. If it does, storms could quickly become severe. If it doesn’t, storms might not form at all, or stay weaker.

Stay weather aware! I will be posting updates throughout the day. #wiwx

TLDR:

  • Multiple rounds of storms expected.

  • Significant severe outbreak possible Monday evening/overnight.

  • Risks: Damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes.

  • Main threat: 9 PM–2 AM.

  • Charge your phones.

  • Have multiple ways to get warnings — even while you sleep.

  • Review your safety plan now.
