James Webb Space Telescope set to launch Dec 18, searching for other life forms

The Hubble Space Telescope was launched and carried into space by the Discovery space shuttle on April 24, 1990.

The James Webb Space Telescope, NASA's most powerful space science telescope ever constructed, will succeed the Hubble Space Telescope and is set to launch on December 18, 2021.

Webb was developed by NASA in collaboration with the ESA (European Space Agency) and the Canadian Space Agency.

According to NASA, "Webb will directly observe a part of space and time never seen before. Webb will gaze into the epoch when the very first stars and galaxies formed, over 13.5 billion years ago."

Webb will also look at nearby universes and solar systems to determine their origin. Most notably, this new telescope will observe exoplanets located in the habitable zone of their stars, searching for other forms of life.

Webb will be equipped with:

  • Near-Infrared Camera

  • Near-Infrared Spectograph

  • Mid-Infrared Instrument

  • Near-Infrarer Imager and Slitless Spectrograph with the Fine Guidance Sensor

According to NASA, Webb will travel around 1 million miles away from Earth.
