Every spring hundreds of people flock to area rivers to view the sturgeon spawning. It's approaching the time when the sturgeon spawn, which should begin within a week or so (as of April 21), according to the Wisconsin DNR.
There are a few places around the area to view these fish that can live as long as 100 years! You can view the sturgeon at the Shawano Dam in Shawano, Bamboo Bend in Shiocton, Wolf River Sturgeon Trail near New London, De Pere Dam at Voyageur Park in De Pere and lastly, the Peshtigo Dam in Peshtigo.
If you can't go out to these places or want to avoid the crowd, you can view live cameras here.
HOW DO THE STURGEONS KNOW IT'S TIME TO TRAVEL UPSTREAM?
"Sturgeon spawning is dependent on water temperature and flow, During seasons when water flow is high and water temperatures rise slowly, spawning begins when the water temperature reaches 53 degrees. In contrast, during seasons of low water flow and more rapid water temperature rise, spawning does not begin until water temperatures reach 58-59 degrees." - Wisconsin DNR
